Vaporwave vs Synthwave vs Retrowave

These three aesthetics are related but visually distinct, and mixing their elements carelessly produces setups that feel incoherent. Understanding the differences before building your setup prevents that.

Vaporwave is the most surreal of the three โ€” it samples 1980s and early 90s corporate aesthetics, classical sculpture, early computer graphics, and consumer culture and distorts them into something deliberately strange. Think marble busts with pink gradients behind them, Windows 95 interfaces rendered in purple, glitched Japanese text, and grid floors extending to a horizon. The palette leans toward pink, purple, and teal with strong pastel undertones.

Synthwave is more cinematic and coherent โ€” it evokes 1980s science fiction film aesthetics, specifically the neon-lit nightscapes of films like Blade Runner and Tron. Dark backgrounds, grid perspectives, outrun-style cars, and a more consistent neon palette of hot pink and electric blue. Synthwave is cleaner and more aggressive than vaporwave.

Retrowave is a broader term that encompasses both, plus any aesthetic that draws from pre-2000 computer and consumer electronics visual culture โ€” CRT scanlines, pixel fonts, tape cassette imagery, early internet graphics. If you are drawn to old computers and early digital aesthetics specifically, retrowave is the more accurate label for your setup direction.

Color Palette

For vaporwave: your base is a deep purple-black (#0d0015 or #1a0a2e), your primary accent is hot pink or magenta (#ff71ce or #ff00ff), and your secondary accent is a soft teal or cyan (#01cdfe or #05ffa1). These three colors โ€” dark base, pink primary, teal secondary โ€” define the core vaporwave palette and should be applied consistently across every interface element.

For synthwave: shift the base to a slightly warmer dark blue-purple (#0a0015 to #1a0033), keep the hot pink accent, and replace the teal secondary with electric blue (#0050ff) or violet (#7b2fff). Synthwave palettes are more saturated and less pastel than vaporwave.

For retrowave: introduce CRT green (#00ff41) or amber (#ffb000) as accent colors alongside the pink, and use a near-black base with a slight warm tint. Retrowave palettes often draw from the specific display technologies of the era they reference โ€” green phosphor monitors, amber LCD, blue plasma screens.

Wallpaper Selection

Vaporwave wallpapers typically feature: grid floors extending to a horizon, classical sculpture (particularly busts) set against gradient skies, early 3D rendered objects like spheres and tori, glitch effects, and Japanese text or signage. The composition is often symmetrical and centered, with strong gradient transitions from pink at the top to purple at the bottom or vice versa.

Synthwave wallpapers are predominantly outrun-style โ€” a car or motorcycle on a straight road toward a city, a grid desert under a large sun bisected by the horizon, a city skyline at night reflected in wet pavement. The perspective lines always converge at a central vanishing point, giving synthwave wallpapers their characteristic sense of motion and depth.

Retrowave wallpapers incorporate CRT effects, scanline overlays, pixel art, and early computer interface elements. A pixel art cityscape with a scanline overlay and a color palette limited to four or five colors captures this direction effectively.

๐Ÿ’ก Where to find them: The Retro category on YohaWallpaper has vaporwave, synthwave, and retrowave wallpapers. Filter by 4K for the sharpest results โ€” gradient-heavy wallpapers in particular benefit from high resolution because compression artifacts are more visible in smooth color transitions.

Fonts

Font choice is one of the most powerful signals of which retro direction you are going. For vaporwave, Wide Latin or any condensed serif with wide tracking creates the stretched, surreal typography associated with the aesthetic. VCR OSD Mono is a free font that replicates the on-screen display text of VHS players โ€” perfect for retrowave setups. Press Start 2P is a free Google Font based on arcade game typography that works well for pixel-forward retrowave.

For synthwave, Orbitron and Audiowide are free Google Fonts that evoke 1980s science fiction title cards without being unreadably stylized. Both work well as system interface fonts and as widget display fonts in Rainmeter or Conky.

For terminal use, keep a monospace font โ€” Fira Code or JetBrains Mono โ€” but apply your palette's colors to the terminal color scheme. The font itself does not need to be stylized for the terminal, where readability during actual use matters more than aesthetic contribution.

Tools for Windows

TranslucentTB with a pink-tinted blur effect on the taskbar is the starting point. Set the taskbar blur color to a very dark magenta โ€” something like #1a0033 at 80 percent opacity โ€” so it feels like it belongs to the wallpaper rather than sitting on top of it.

For Rainmeter skins, search DeviantArt for "vaporwave Rainmeter" and "synthwave Rainmeter" โ€” the community has produced several suites specifically for these aesthetics, including clock and system stats displays with scanline effects, pink neon text, and grid decorations. The Monstercat Visualizer Rainmeter skin, configured with a vaporwave color scheme, creates a real-time audio visualizer on the desktop that fits the aesthetic perfectly.

Change your Windows accent color to your primary pink or magenta to propagate the palette into system notifications, the Start Menu, and title bars. In Windows 11, go to Settings โ†’ Personalization โ†’ Colors โ†’ Custom color and enter your hex code directly.

Tools for Linux

On KDE Plasma, the Lightly or Aritim-Dark theme provides a good base that accepts custom accent colors cleanly. Set your system accent to your primary pink and install Papirus icon pack โ€” the Papirus-Dark variant in pink or purple folder color via papirus-folders creates a visually consistent icon set for the vaporwave direction.

The Dracula GTK theme, available for both GNOME and KDE, is one of the closest ready-made themes to the vaporwave palette โ€” its purple and pink accent system requires minimal adjustment to align with a vaporwave or synthwave setup. Install it from the Dracula theme website or through your distribution's package manager if available.

Terminal Setup

The terminal is where the retro aesthetic can go deepest. The Synthwave 84 color scheme, available for VS Code and most terminal emulators, applies a full synthwave palette to your coding environment โ€” dark purple background, pink and magenta keywords, cyan strings, and electric blue comments. It is one of the most downloaded VS Code themes and has been ported to iTerm2, Alacritty, Kitty, and Windows Terminal.

Add Neofetch with a custom ASCII logo colored in your palette โ€” a vaporwave-colored ASCII art of a Greek column or a CRT monitor fits the aesthetic and displays every time you open a terminal. The Neofetch GitHub wiki has instructions for using custom ASCII art files with custom color codes.

For a CRT scanline effect on the terminal, some terminal emulators support custom shaders โ€” Alacritty and WezTerm both support GLSL shaders that can add scanline, bloom, and chromatic aberration effects to the terminal rendering, creating a convincing retro CRT look on a modern display.

Finishing Touches

Apply a vaporwave or synthwave browser theme. The Dracula theme for Firefox and Chrome covers the synthwave direction well. For a more specific vaporwave look, Firefox Color lets you build a fully custom theme with your exact pink and purple hex codes in minutes.

Set your cursor to a matching theme. A pink or magenta cursor with a slight glow effect is available in several cursor packs on DeviantArt and pling.com. On Linux, cursor themes install like any other theme and apply immediately through your DE's appearance settings.

For animated wallpaper, a looping synthwave animation โ€” a grid horizon with a pulsing sun, or a city flyover with neon reflections โ€” running in Lively Wallpaper on Windows or in a video wallpaper tool on Linux adds the final layer of movement that makes the aesthetic feel fully realized.
